In the summer of 1983 the Kansas City Royals played the New York Yankees in a game that would come to be known as “The Pine Tar Incident”. The larger than life true story unfolded almost like a hollywood movie, filled with over the top characters and plot twists. We recently got the chance to film a very ambitious piece for Fox Sports; though a movie was never actually made on this story, the premise of this piece is that a movie was made, ‘Tar Wars’, and this is the making of that film. The project was an incredibly fun shoot much like a hollywood movie itself, complete with custom built set pieces, actors in full period costume, and a multi day schedule spread out over multiple locations. Director of Photography Jonathan Belinski, along with the talented producing team at DLP Media Group were all playing themselves in the movie as well, working with the hilarious David Koechner who played the ‘Tar Wars’ Director. To achieve the cinematic look for the actual production, Jonathan shot with Red Dragon cameras outfitted with Leica Prime lenses. He also utilized an array of some next generation lighting including the new lightweight LED Lite Tile units from Lite Gear to provide a soft overhead light in many different scenes. ‘The Making of Tar Wars’ was with out a doubt of the the most creative, exciting and unique projects we have ever worked on.
